Hydrogenated castor oil. Acts as a thixotropic agent in the production of solvent-based coating systems. It consists mainly of the triglyceride of 12hydroxystearic acid. This is a saturated fatty acid with a hydroxyl functionality and therefore non-drying but suitable for various chemical derivatizations. Alberdingk® HCO Flakes 52 is a wax-like solid at room temperature which is derived from castor oil by controlled hydrogenation. In most organic solvents it is insoluble but compatible with many waxes and resins. It is of importance concerning the production of hot melts like paper coatings for food packaging. The main uses of castor oil include the industrial production of coatings based on dehydrated alkyd resins. Also used in paper coatings, oil paint, lubricants and polyurethane floor coatings applications.
